TUFF STUFF PUBLISHING, INC. TO PRODUCE AND DISTRIBUTE
TRADING CARDS FEATURING THE PEANUTS COMIC STRIP CHARACTERS
RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Tuff Stuff Publishing, Inc., announced today that it has signed a contract with Peanuts comic strip creator Charles Schulz and United Feature Syndicate for the exclusive rights to produce and distribute trading cards in the U.S. and Canada featuring the Peanuts comic strip characters. The first series of cards is scheduled to be available in December 1991 in time for Christmas. "We believe that a Peanuts card series holds endless possibilities," said Ernie White, president of the company.
"We are obviously very excited to have won this contract," he said. "Peanuts is undoubtedly the most recognized comic strip in the world today. As a result, we think Charlie Brown and all his friends will have great appeal for card collectors - both young and old. In fact, we feel certain many of the cards will become highly sought after collector's items in no time at all."
The Peanuts comic strip appears in more than 2,300 newspapers, is translated into 26 languages and is read by over 200 million people. The strip has spawned animated television shows and has received a string of Emmy awards and universal critical acclaim. The strip has also been the subject of over 985 books (of which more than 190 million copies have been purchased). The characters have appeared in movies and on the Broadway stage.
The comic strip was officially born on Oct. 2, 1950, when Peanuts debuted in nine newspapers and featured only four characters. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Shermy and Patty (not Peppermint Patty). Artistically the characters appeared different from today but the dialogue has always been distinctively Charlie Brown.
According to White, card collecting is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the world today. "It is estimated that over 25 million people collect cards spending several billion annually. It's a lot of fun for children while many adults view the cards as investments," he said.
Tuff Stuff Publishing, Inc. is a multi-million dollar company that emphasizes family fun through collecting. The company publishes major collectors magazines and trading cards, produces related accessories, promotes trade shows and is involved in other business enterprises related to the trading card industry.
