TUESDAY MORNING CORPORATION ANNOUNCES FOURTH QUARTER INTERIM SALES

DALLAS, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Tuesday Morning Corporation (NASDAQ: TUES) announced the company's fourth quarter sales as of Dec. 4, 1993.
Net sales for the fourth quarter through Saturday, Dec. 4, decreased approximately 6.0 percent to $48.1 million from $51.2 million in the corresponding period in 1992. There were 235 Tuesday Morning stores open at Dec. 4, 1993, compared with 190 stores open at Dec. 5, 1992. Comparable store sales decreased approximately 18 percent. These net sales results should not necessarily be considered indicative of results for the entire fourth quarter of 1993.
"As a result of increased discounting in the marketplace, sales during the first portion of the crucial Thanksgiving-to-Christmas selling period have been very disappointing. The company is planning additional promotional activity to counter these competitive pressures. We are also planning to refocus the business for 1994 by realigning the management of our buying department and moderating the rate of store expansion to enable us to accelerate our installation of point of sale by the end of the 1994. We will aggressively pursue our business of deep deep discounts on closeouts in our unique four-event selling strategy," stated Steve Higgins, president.
Tuesday Morning is a deep-discount, closeout gift chain operating 235 stores in 32 states. The stores are open four times a year on an event sale basis during the retail industry's peak selling seasons. Each location offers thousands of closeout items in categories that include gifts, housewares, linens, toys and seasonal items such as holiday trim. All merchandise is sold at 50-80 percent off retail prices and the company specializes in famous-maker, first quality merchandise which is often found in prestigious department and specialty stores.
