TSS LTD. FORMS JOINT VENTURE WITH INTERSTATE MEDIA TO OFFER ITS IN-STORE ELECTRONIC COUPONING PROGRAM IN TRUCK STOPS

PROVIDENCE, R.I., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- TSS Ltd. (NASDAQ: TSSLD) reported today that it had signed a letter of intent with Interstate Media to provide the TSS proprietary electronic promotion program, "The Savings Spot,"(R) in truck stops throughout the United States." Under terms of the letter of intent, Interstate Media will provide sales and marketing of the program and TSS will provide the technology, systems and operations. TSS will retain certain sales and marketing rights. A demonstration program is slated to begin April 15, 1993 in two truck stops in California, and one in Connecticut. There are up to 2,000 full facility truck stops in the United States.
Interstate Media, headquartered in Roseville, Calif., is the distributor of the truck stop industry's leading publication, "Truck Stop World" and "Truckers News." In addition, Interstate Media provides many other promotional programs and services for the truck stop industry.
TSS Ltd. develops and provides in-store electronic promotional programs through its proprietary computerized terminals which dispense coupons for consumer packaged goods and services of local area merchants.
In making the announcement, Michael A. Clark, president, said "This arrangement represents the first step in expanding the TSS program to the specialty retail environment beyond the progress we have made in achieving retail distribution in the supermarket, drug and mass merchandise segments.
"This program has two advantages. First, it has the potential to create a coast-to-coast program enabling TSS to provide greater national distribution to product marketers. Second, the TSS program will be used to create driver loyalty by giving drivers promotional offers at other truck stops within the chain that are participating in the TSS program."
Bud Farquhar, president of Interstate Promotions, the subsidiary of Interstate Media handling the placement of the electronic promotion program, said, "Truck stops are large volume, complex, multi-retail establishments. They provide fuel and servicing, restaurants, and stores to truckers and other travelers. The Savings Spot(R) program will give these locations an effective merchandising capability for each of these profit centers.
Interstate Media has been enormously successful in serving both the truck drivers and truck stop operators. "The reason we chose to work with TSS is because we are very excited about the capabilities of the TSS system and the enormous potential for the program to provide value to truck stop product and service marketers by making their promotional dollars far more effective."
TSS currently operates electronic promotion programs in Ralphs supermarkets in southern California and in certain Kmart stores. In addition TSS currently has letters of intent for demonstration programs with divisions of three other United States supermarket chains, including Sentry Markets, a division of Fleming Companies, and Kroger. It has also announced agreements for demonstrations in Caldor mass merchandise stores and in two of the nation's largest drug store chains, Payless Drug Stores and Longs Drug Stores.
