TSI PROVIDES INSTRUMENT FOR ATMOSPHERIC EXPERIMENTS DURING EARTHWINDS PROJECT

SHOREVIEW, Minn., Nov. 20 ~PRNewswire~ -- TSI Incorporated (NASDAQ: TSII) will provide a Model 3010 Condensation Particle Counter for use in experiments conducted aboard the Earthwinds balloon during its flight around the earth. The Model 3010 is a highly sensitive sensor used for detecting extremely small airborne particles. It will be used by the Earthwinds crew to determine the relationship between volcanic eruptions and ozone in the atmosphere.
Funded by Hilton Hotels and other corporate sponsors, the purpose of the Earthwinds project is to complete the first circumnavigation of the earth by balloon. Scheduled to be launched sometime between Nov. 21, 1992, and Feb. 15, 1993, the balloon will complete the trip in two to three weeks. A unique two-balloon design and specialized capsule developed and tested with the help of NASA Lewis Research Center (Cleveland) and McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Group (Huntington Beach, Calif.) allows the vehicle to remain aloft for this length of time, a feat previously through impossible by any balloon type. The balloon will be piloted by Larry Newman, who also piloted the Double Eagle V trans-Pacific flight in 1981. Crew members are Don Moses, supervisor of capsule construction, and Maj. Gen. Vladimer Dzhanibekov, chief of cosmonaut training for the Russian Air Force. The Earthwinds balloon will float at approximately 35,000 feet, near the jetstream and tropopause.
The Model 3010 Condensation Particle Counter was selected for the atmospheric experiments because it is small and lightweight, requires little power, yet provides extremely reliable data. It detects particles as small as 0.01 micrometer in diameter using a technique that enlarges particles through condensation to a size that is more easily detected.
TSI Incorporated designs and manufactures a broad line of fluid flow, particle measurement, and meteorological instrumentation. The company has made Condensation Particle Counters for over 15 years and is regarded in research fields as a leading supplier of this type of instrument.
