TRUS JOIST MACMILLAN INITIATES NEW RELATIONSHIP
 WITH LEADING JAPANESE HOME BUILDER
BOISE, Idaho, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Trus Joist MacMillan (TJM) announced today it has started selling directly to Japan's leading builder of western-style residential construction. The Boise-based company will now sell its Japanese brand of Ecowood(TM) engineered wood directly to Mitsui Home America and its Japanese parent company, Mitsui Home Co. Mitsui builds approximately 10,000 homes in Japan each year that use western-style, 2x4 wood framing.
Mitsui will gradually employ TJM's engineered wood I-joists into all of its homes. Kenzo Yamashita, managing director and general manager of R&D for Mitsui Home Co., said his company selected TJM's products because of their superior quality and outstanding performance characteristics, as well as for their environmentally friendly use of wood fiber.
"We are in an environmentally conscious decade, and environmentally friendly products like the ones offered by TJM will only gain popularity as more and more people will demand and choose products of this nature," he said.
Keith Erickson, international business director for TJM, believes the new agreement creates an opportunity for both companies. "It allows Mitsui direct access to a dependable supply of high-quality, value-added, environmentally sound engineered wood products. For TJM, this new relationship has the potential to speed the Japanese market penetration of our products in a substantive way," he said.
Added Yamashita, "Our business relationship benefits both parties. The fact that good business relationships such as this do exist between the two countries should not be kept a secret."
TJM said its experience in developing a Japanese market has been unlike the highly publicized efforts of many of its American contemporaries.
"Contrary to recent headlines in the media, it is not impossible for an American company to succeed in Japan," said Erickson. "There are barriers to entry in every country, the U.S. included. But they can be overcome."
He elaborated, "You aren't going to be an overnight success in Japan. You have to tailor your efforts to a different culture and a different customer. We've worked to do that, and we think in the long term it will pay off handsomely."
TJM is a joint venture owned 51 percent by managing partner TJ International (NASDAQ: TCJO) and 49 percent by MacMillan Bloedel (NASDAQ: MMBLF). It was formed in 1991 as the world's first forest products company based on technology rather than ownership of timberlands. The company's engineered wood products, marketed in Japan under the Ecowood brand, include the Silent Floor(R) system of TJI(R) joists, MICRO-LAM(R) laminated veneer lumber and Parallam(R) parallel strand lumber. The Ecowood products are used as large- dimension joists, rafters, beams, headers, columns and posts in residential construction.
NOTE: Ecowood is a trademark of Trus Joist MacMillan, a limited partnership, Boise. MICRO-LAM, Parallam, Silent Floor and TJI are registered trademarks of Trus Joist MacMillan, a limited partnership, Boise.
