WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is the statement of United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) President Richard Trumka regarding the appointment of W.J. "Bill" Usery as a mediator in the four-month old coal strike. The appointment was announced today by Secretary of Labor Robert Reich:
We endorse Secretary Reich's decision to appoint Bill Usery as an additional mediator to help resolve this dispute. It is a positive and a constructive step towards settling this strike with an agreement that's fair to both parties.
The UMWA stands ready to work with Bill Usery and Paul Stuckenschneider of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to bring this dispute to a swift conclusion with a strong, new contract that meets the needs of our members, their families and the coal industry.
