TRITON ELECTS CHEATHAM AND BISHOP VICE PRESIDENTS

 DALLAS, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Triton Energy Corporation (NYSE: OIL) today announced that its Board of Directors elected two vice presidents. Frank M. Cheatham Jr., was promoted to the position of vice president, accounting, and Don C. Bishop was elected vice president, legal.
 Cheatham, prior to his promotion, was the company's controller. He joined Triton in 1980 after a career in public accounting and has since served in a number of positions of increasing responsibility. Cheatham was named financial accounting manager in 1981, assistant controller in 1983 and controller in 1990. In his new position he will be responsible for the Company's world-wide accounting and financial reporting.
 Cheatham, a certified public accountant, is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree.
 Bishop brings to Triton a distinguished record of 25 years' experience in international energy law. Most recently, he was General Counsel for the international engineering firm of Howe-Baker Engineers. Prior to that, Bishop held senior legal positions with Maxus Energy and Pennzoil.
 Bishop is a graduate of the University of Texas School of Law and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, also from the University of Texas.
 Triton Energy Corporation, headquartered in Dallas, is an international independent oil and gas exploration and production company with oil and gas interest in 11 countries.
