TRITON ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF TWO NEW BOARD MEMBERS

 DALLAS, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Triton Energy Corporation (NYSE: OIL) today announced the appointment of Michael E. McMahon, 46, and J. Otis Winters, 60, to the board of directors. McMahon and Winters fill the vacancies of Tom Steele and Jake Goodson, who retired earlier this year.
 McMahon is a partner with Aeneas Group, Inc., a subsidiary of Harvard Management Company, Inc. Harvard Management Company is a private investment company responsible for managing the endowment of Harvard University. McMahon has primary responsibility for the fund's energy and commodities investments. Prior to his current position, McMahon was managing director and co-head of Salomon Brothers Inc.'s energy and chemicals investment banking group. He holds an undergraduate degree in American civilization from Brown University and attended the Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School. McMahon is also a director of Tejas Power Corporation.
 Winters is chairman and co-founder of Pate, Winters and Stone, Inc., a management consulting firm. Previously, Winters was a managing director of Mason Best Company, which is a merchant banking firm, and served in various positions at several oil and gas-related companies. Winters holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in petroleum engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
 The appointments of McMahon and Winters are effective Sept. 16, 1993.
 Triton, with headquarters in Dallas, is an international independent oil and gas exploration and production company with oil and gas interests in numerous countries.
