TRINITY BIOTECH COMPLETES RAPID HEPATITIS B TEST

DUBLIN, Ireland, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Trinity Biotech (NASDAQ: HIVSY) announced today that it has completed development of a rapid, whole blood hepatitis B test and will be commencing clinical trials soon. The test is a seven minute procedure similar in format to the Company's rapid HIV-1/2 tests now in production. Those tests use either whole blood or saliva as a sample. Completion of the blood-based hepatitis test is the first step in eventual production of the rapid saliva-based test now under final development itself.
Hepatitis and related diseases continue to be one of the top health threats worldwide, particularly in Asia. About 300 million people worldwide and 5 million in the United States are infected with hepatitis of some form. Most of the over 70 million units of blood collected worldwide are tested for hepatitis B and C, contributing to a market of roughly $300 million worldwide.
Trinity Vice Chairman, Michael Hubbard, stated, "The development of the hepatitis B test is a continuation of our goal to produce a complete line of rapid, non-invasive tests for infectious and sexually- transmitted diseases. In part because of the impact of hepatitis, a diagnostic test for this disease was the next logical step after production of the HIV tests."
Trinity Biotech is an Ireland-based diagnostics company dedicated to the development of rapid, on-site, saliva tests for HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases.
