TRIMBLE TECHNOLOGY PERVADES AMERICA'S CUP '92
SAN DIEGO, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- In keeping with its reputation

as one of the world's most high-tech sporting events, the 1992 America's Cup has enlisted the help of Trimble Navigation (NASDAQ: TRMB) and a new satellite technology called the Global Positioning System, or GPS. GPS is a worldwide satellite-based radionavigation system developed and maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense. As a GPS market leader and the official supplier of GPS products to America's Cup '92, Trimble and its technology are serving this year's races in several new ways.
 GPS for Race Management
To maintain credibility and the confidence of America's Cup contenders, race management must provide the highest possible accuracy and precision in timing, mark placement and weather monitoring -- all within the "dynamic" environment of the race courses. Unlike fixed auto racing tracks, sailboat racing marks must be directly aligned with the prevailing wind direction and changed if winds change significantly.
Trimble's GPS systems allow racing officials to do many of these tasks much more easily and accurately. The race committee boat, for example, uses GPS in combination with radar and specialized computer software to calculate, in advance, the placement of set markers and relocate them if necessary. With GPS, this can be done quickly and precisely, even in mid-race -- and without confusing the competitors.
GPS Tracking System for Broadcast Coverage of the Races
Anyone who has watched the America's Cup on television knows that the races are not always easy to follow or understand. The course can be miles offshore, and even with the images from multiple on-board and helicopter cameras, broadcasters have been limited in how much of the race they could show or explain. However, a unique GPS-based animated graphics tracking system called SailTrack(TM) is changing this year's race coverage.
SailTrack was jointly developed by Trimble and Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) in conjunction with ESPN to make the America's Cup more enjoyable and accessible to both racing aficionados and novices. SailTrack takes "differentially" corrected GPS -- DGPS -- information about the precise moving location of each racing boat and transmits it to the America's Cup International Broadcast Center (IBC), where it is fed into custom software running on Silicon Graphics workstations. There it is calculated and "translated" for TV in the form of animated graphics and other useful information that ESPN commentators can use to illustrate, explain, and simulate all aspects of the races.
Syndicates Use GPS for Testing Yacht Performance
Seven America's Cup syndicates have chosen Trimble's Differential GPS systems for testing the performance of their boats: America(3) and the syndicates from New Zealand, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden and Australia.
Each team uses its own special software to feed highly accurate boat speed and position data from Trimble's on-board DGPS receiver into an on-board computer to measure and record the boat's performance under a variety of sailing conditions, thereby building a database of information for subsequent analysis.
Trimble Navigation Ltd. was founded in 1978 and is headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif. The company has developed and sold more than 38,000 GPS systems for applications as varied as mapping endangered species, navigating airplanes and boats, guiding Allied troops in the Gulf War, helping public safety officials manage the Oakland fire and tracking fleets of courier trucks.
