BROADCAST NEW TRACKING SYSTEM FOR AMERICA'S CUP RACES
SAN DIEGO, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) and Trimble Navigation Ltd. (NASDAQ: TRMB) in conjunction with ESPN Inc. have introduced SailTrack(TM), a satellite-based graphics tracking system that will enhance television coverage of the America's Cup races. The system is designed to make sailboat racing more enjoyable and accessible to both racing aficionados and novice viewers.
The system permits broadcasters to augment live television images of a race with two- and three-dimensional animated graphics. It gives television commentators the ability to educate as well as entertain, give a "chalk talk" replay of key maneuvers, or illustrate aspects of the competition as it unfolds in real time. The sports tracking system was demonstrated today at the America's Cup headquarters during the final challenger and defender races.
"The animated graphics presentation in SailTrack helps to de- mystify satellite-positioning and tracking technology for the general public," said David Vaughn, Trimble's vice president of manufacturing. "We see a natural marriage of technologies here that could open up a whole new world -- not only for television sports, but for many other applications as well."
Trimble Navigation's technology identifies the exact location of moving objects; Silicon Graphics' technology takes that information and renders it into realistic, animated graphics images. The companies expect SailTrack to inspire applications for air traffic control and competitive automobile and airplane racing.
"Our vision is to use real-time graphics to render more information than what it visibly available in real life," said Jim Clark, chairman and founder of Silicon Graphics. "SailTrack achieves this by integrating data from several sources and providing ESPN with graphics displays that more accurately reflect what's happening during a race."
"SailTrack will do for America's Cup '92 what the on-board camera did for the races in '87," said Peter Isler, the top-ranked U.S. match racing skipper and a racing commentator for ESPN. "Silicon Graphics' computerized graphics displays and Trimble's precise, real-time capabilities give me and my fellow ESPN commentators a valuable visual tool to make the America's Cup more fun to watch and the sport of racing easier to understand."
 SailTrack:
-- Provides graphics tools such as realistic-looking knotmeters, wind arrows and boat wakes and trails. Broadcasters can use the SailTrack images as templates on which ESPN's "Telestrator" can be used to highlight a boat's tactical moves or the effects of a wind shift.
-- Lets a director choose a camera position as an event is happening and then restage or replay it by simulating events that are impossible or impermissible with real television equipment, such as moving the camera ten miles in three seconds or flying directly in front of a boat.
-- Translates raw telemetry data, filters out fluctuating position fixes and fills in missing parameters to create a simple model of sailboat performance and an easy-to-understand visual image of complex maneuvers.
The new sports tracking system is also being used by the Tokyo Broadcast System (TBS), TV New Zealand and Italy's Telemontecarlo.
