TRIMBLE EXCLUSIVE SATELLITE DATA TERMINAL SUPPLIER FOR AMERICAN MOBILE SATELLITE CORPORATION

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Trimble Navigation (NASDAQ: TRMB) announced today that it has signed a contract to be the exclusive supplier of mobile satellite data terminals for American Mobile Satellite Corp.'s (AMSC) SKYCELL Fleet Management mobile communications service. The contract includes an initial order for 1,000 Trimble Galaxy Inmarsat-C/GPS terminals. Delivery will begin immediately with more than 650 units scheduled for the end of 1993. First installations of the Trimble Galaxy terminals will be on the fleet owned by TMC Transportation Inc., a major long-haul truck operator in Des Moines, Iowa, which just signed a multi-year agreement with AMSC to supply satellite mobile communications for their entire fleet.
AMSC will be selling the systems for both trucking, maritime, rail and fixed-site applications. The Trimble Galaxy land mobile system is ideal for fleets of long-haul trucks for both position-reporting and two-way messaging. Messages can be sent between the vehicle and the dispatcher's office, between vehicles or to other locations worldwide. Any DOS computer or laptop may serve as the driver interface. Specialized operator terminals for in-vehicle use are also available. The Trimble Galaxy system utilizes the Global Positioning System satellites to precisely determine vehicle position, and the AMSC satellites for communication. The Trimble Galaxy system through AMSC's communications network, allows transportation and maritime companies to efficiently manage an entire fleet operation 24 hours per day, regardless of fleet size or geographic location throughout North America.
Christopher McCleary, vice president, sales and marketing for AMSC, said, "We selected Trimble's Galaxy GPS mobile data terminal because of its superior features, robust design, demonstrated reliability and GPS position location technology. AMSC is pleased to announce the signing of TMC Transportation of Des Moines, Iowa, as a customer of our SKYCELL Fleet Management mobile communications service. We will outfit TMC's entire fleet of nearly 500 trucks with the Trimble Galaxy GPS mobile data terminal."
American Mobile Satellite Corp. has the FCC license to provide the full range of Mobile Satellite Services to the U.S. market. Through SKYCELL Fleet Management, AMSC provides advanced satellite communications services to America's transportation industries. Seamless nationwide service including two-way communication and position reporting, 24 hours a day in any weather is available with Trimble's Galaxy units. AMSC is the only satellite-based mobile communications provider licensed to offer advanced services including voice, fax and nationwide dispatch communications, which will become available when AMSC launches its own satellite next year.

Unique data reporting capabilities allow Galaxy to accept commands to send position reports automatically to up to 40 different destinations. Further, Galaxy includes eight separate timers that can be programmed by a command from the central office over the satellite link. This allows position reports to be sent automatically to different destinations on different schedules. "Very low cost position reporting as well as two-way message communication, regardless of vehicle location or time of day, are key attributes of this system. These feature will allow users to better manage their fleets, saving enough money to easily pay for the equipment in two years," said Tony Gacchter, Trimble vice president of communication products.
The Trimble Galaxy is the only Inmarsat-C/GPS system approved by the German Bundesamt fur Zulassungen in der Telekommunikation (BZT). The BZT EMI requirements are among the most stringent in the world. Other Galaxy features include Packet Switched Data Network (PSDN) and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) support, Data Network Identification (DNID) download and delete capability, and Area, Individual, Program and Group polling. These features, as well as others equally unique, e.g., position reports on power up and power down and extensive logging capabilities, are all included in the 1,000 Galaxy units in the initial AMSC order.
