SANTA MONICA, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Trilogy Entertainment Group has signed a multiyear first-look production deal with Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer and United Artists Pictures, it was jointly announced today by MGM Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frank Mancuso and Trilogy principals Pen Densham, Richard Lewis and John Watson.
Trilogy is currently before the cameras on MGM's action-thriller "Blown Away," starring Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Lloyd Bridges, Forest Whitaker and Suzy Amis, being directed by Stephen Hopkins ("Judgement Night"), and set to open on the fourth of July weekend, 1994. Trilogy has previously been responsible for bringing audiences the two recent blockbusters "Backdraft" and "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves."
In making the announcement, Mancuso said, "Trilogy is one of the most dynamic producing entities in the industry today. We are thrilled to have them aboard at MGM/UA, and expect them to play an integral part in the future of this studio."
Trilogy partner Lewis commented, "We're delighted to have reached this agreement with MGM/UA. We have developed strong relationships with Frank Mancuso, Mike Marcus, John Calley and Rebecca Pollack at the beginning of our term together, which is unusual and extremely advantageous, resulting in enormous trust. Benefiting us as filmmakers, we know first-hand that we will get not only the support and autonomy that we need from the MGM/UA team, but quick decisions in development and production.
Densham, Lewis and Watson partnered to form Trilogy in 1986. The Trilogy team is recognized as unique for their strong talent relationships and their abilities as on-set producers and writers. The meteoric rise of Trilogy Entertainment Group is a testament to the creative hands-on approach of Densham, Watson and Lewis. When the still-young production company saw back-to-back box office smashes in the competitive summer of 1991, it instantly put them on the map as a team to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry.
The Trilogy partners' last two produced features, "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and "Backdraft," not only achieved combined grosses worldwide of nearly $600 million, but also generated huge successes in other media. "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" spawned a double-platinum soundtrack album and an Oscar-nominated song, which was also the longest-running No. 1 single ever in the history of the British charts. "Backdraft" earned four Academy Award nominations and was further saluted in a hugely successfully attraction at the Universal Studios Tour.
MGM Pictures President, Michael Marcus, commented on the agreement with Trilogy, noting, "Pen Densham, John Watson and Richard Lewis have proven individually and collectively to have the talent, intuition and business acumen that spell success in Hollywood. I look forward to working with each of them in creating quality films for MGM."
United Artists Pictures President John Calley echoed these sentiments, adding, "`Blown Away' is only the first of the terrific features that Trilogy is sure to bring to the studio. In the weeks to come, there will be several outstanding projects announced, and we are excited about the future prospects of this collaboration."
Joining Trilogy in their new home will be Christian Rehr as vice president of Development, Mark Stern as vice president of Production and Terri Clark as director of Creative Affairs.
Together MGM and Trilogy have now set their sites on the summer of 1994 with the production of "Blown Away," which is shooting in Los Angeles until mid-November. The suspense-filled story of a police bomb squad expert (J. Bridges) who races against time in a match of wits and skill with an ingenious bomber (Jones) boasts an Oscar-caliber cast, outstanding production team and spectacular special effects, which have already made it one of the most anticipated films for next year.
