TRIBUNE COMPLETES COMPTON'S MULTIMEDIA GROUP PURCHASE

CHICAGO, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Tribune Company (NYSE: TRB) has completed the purchase of Compton's Multimedia Publishing Group, a leader in the development and distribution of interactive multimedia software for the consumer and education markets. The purchase agreement was announced July 6.
Compton's Multimedia Group consists of Compton's NewMedia, a software publishing company with headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif., and Compton's Learning Company, the Chicago-based publisher of Compton's Encyclopedia's print version.
Tribune purchased Compton's from Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc., for approximately $57 million cash. Compton's becomes part of Tribune Publishing Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tribune Company. Tribune Publishing also operates daily newspapers in major markets and in early August acquired Contemporary Books, a non-fiction publisher.
Compton's Chief Executive Stanley D. Frank and General Manager Norman J. Bastin will continue to lead the company, whose 12-month revenues through June of 1993 totaled approximately $28 million. Its revenues have grown at an annual rate of more than 50 percent over the past three years.
Best known for its 26-volume encyclopedia, Compton's also publishes reference, education, entertainment and business-information titles. Compton's is a leader in the interactive compact disk format known as CD-ROM, and is adapting traditional print products to these compact disks, which play text, graphics, audio and video on a computer or television screen.
Compton's publishes 31 CD-ROM and 16 floppy disk titles, and owns rights to more than 100 others from leading publishers. The company also distributes 81 CD-ROM titles under an extensive affiliate-label program, and owns and licenses proprietary technology such as SmarTrieve(TM) and MOST(TM) (Multiple Operating System Technology) to organize and present information in multimedia formats.
Tribune is a leading information and entertainment company. It publishes six daily newspapers, operates seven TV and six radio stations, produces and syndicates information and programming, publishes books and information in print and digital formats, and has an interest in newsprint manufacturing.
