TRIBUNE APPOINTS DAVID D. HILLER SENIOR VP/DEVELOPMENT; JAMES E. CUSHING JR. NAMED VP/GENERAL COUNSEL

 CHICAGO, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- David D. Hiller, Tribune Company (NYSE: TRB) senior vice president/general counsel, has been appointed senior vice president/development, Charles T. Brumback, chairman/chief executive officer, announced here today.
 James E. Cushing Jr. will become vice president/general counsel, replacing Hiller, Brumback said. Cushing currently serves as ChicagoLand Television News (CLTV) vice president/business affairs.
 Both appointments become effective Nov. 1, 1993.
 Hiller, 40, will be responsible for planning, acquisitions, new-venture investments and other initiatives in information and entertainment businesses related to Tribune's strategies for long-term growth. He will report to Brumback. Hiller replaces Scott C. Smith, who as of Sept. 1, 1993, became president and CEO of The Sun- Sentinel Company in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and publisher of the Sun- Sentinel newspaper.

 Hiller has been the company's general counsel since 1988, and was appointed a senior vice president in February 1993. He has directed the company's legal department and has been responsible for managing the company's legal affairs.
 He joined the Chicago law firm of Sidley & Austin in 1983, and became a partner in 1986. Before that, Hiller spent two years in the U.S. Department of Justice as a special assistant to Attorney General William French Smith. In 1979-80, he was a law clerk to U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Malcolm Wilkey and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart.
 A native of the Chicago area, Hiller received a bachelor's degree from Harvard College and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1980.
 Cushing, 38, an attorney and CPA, negotiated and administered the construction and purchasing phase of CLTV, the Chicago-area 24-hour local cable news channel that became operational Jan. 1, 1993. Subsequently, he has been responsible for overseeing daily operations, implementing CLTV's business plan and negotiating affiliate agreements. In his new position he will report to John T. Sloan, senior vice president/administration.
 Cushing joined Tribune's law department in 1987 and became senior counsel in 1990, leaving to join CLTV in March 1992. Before that he was an attorney with the Chicago law firms of Boodell, Sears and later Bell, Boyd and Lloyd. From 1977 to 1979 he was an auditor with Arthur Andersen & Co. in Chicago.
 A Chicago native, Cushing received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and a law degree from Loyola University of Chicago. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1982.
