TRIAD REPORTS RESULTS FOR SECOND QUARTER OF 1993

LIVERMORE, Calif., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Triad Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: TRSC) today reported revenues of $37 million and operating profit of $3.6 million for the second quarter of 1993, generating earnings per share of 6 cents based on 17 million common shares and equivalents.
In the second quarter of 1992, Triad posted record second quarter of $39 million, with an operating profit of $4.4 million resulting in earnings per share of 5 cents, based on 14.5 million common shares and equivalents.
Revenues for the first half of 1993 were $71.1 million, compared to a record $74 million one year ago. Operating income of $6.3 million this year compared to $8.3 million in 1992.
Second quarter retail hardgoods sales rose 20 percent over the same period of 1992 to $6.3 million and service dealer sales rose 31 percent to $1.2 million, reflecting recent product introductions and increased commitment of resources to these higher growth potential markets. Automotive revenues were $8.1 million compared to a record $11.6 million on the second quarter of 1992.
Information Services revenues were $4.9 million in the just- completed quarter, compared to $4.5 million in the same period of 1992. Sales of the Triad Service System and ServiceCatworkstation in the service dealer segment will contribute additional database and customer support revenues in future quarters.
Customer Services were $14.2 million, compared to $14.7 million in the second quarter of 1992, reflecting reduced automotive systems installations, price reduction for certain peripheral products and automotive customers discontinuing support. In addition, expenses associated with certain litigation matters related to third-party service provision were incurred in the second quarter of 1993.
"Deferrals of automotive systems purchases that surfaced in the first quarter continued in the second, reflecting continuing economic concerns," Triad President and Chief Executive Officer James R. Porter said. Still, second quarter automotive systems revenues improved 20 percent over the first quarter of this year.
"Historically, the automotive jobber market has been the major source of Triad's systems revenues," Porter said. "But, given the maturity of the segment, it is clear that the retail hardgoods and service dealer markets present a growing opportunity for expansion of our customer base and accompanying source of recurring revenues for services and support. We expect continuing growth in these markets as we shift resources to them from the jobber organization, increasing our direct sales forces and developing additional alternative sales channels, including telemarketing."
Porter said Triad is increasing product development expenditures to meet the emerging information management needs of customers in each market, "an investment that will begin to pay dividends in future quarters.
"We've just introduced our first electronic catalog database product for the United Kingdom automotive market, creating a new source of Information Services revenues, along with new systems sales and upgrades," Porter said.
"We've begun shipping our automotive database to KMart for use in its service centers and are in final tests with Goodyear. Sears, which has also contracted for the database, is in the process of developing its internal system."
Porter added that Triad is beginning to see dividends from the more than 40 Advantage agreements it has signed with major retail hardgoods distributors to endorse Triad's Eagle family of systems to their customers.
"Approximately one-third of the retail hardgoods systems sold in the second quarter were to customers of Advantage distributors," he said. "We anticipate that percentage to increase as the advantage program expands and more retailers become aware of the cost-effective benefits of the Eagle system."
Triad creates business and information management solutions for the automotive aftermarket and the retail hardgoods industry, providing approximately 13,000 customers worldwide with automated efficiencies, comprehensive support and financing through its Triad Financial Services Corporation subsidiary. Utilizing Triad's unique databases, the Information Services organization is the company's fastest growing unit.
