TREDEGAR REPORTS IMPROVED YEAR-END, FOURTH-QUARTER RESULTS
RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Tredegar Industries Inc. (NYSE: TG) reported today its sales, net income and earnings per share for the 12 months and fourth quarter of 1991.
Tredegar's sales for the year totaled $473,951,000, compared with sales of $547,466,000 in 1990. Net income for 1991 was $5,623,000, or 52 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $24,686,000, or $2.19 per share, in 1990.
In the fourth quarter of 1991, Tredegar's sales were $115,852,000, compared with $115,750,000 a year earlier. Net income was $2,130,000, or 20 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $17,931,000, or $1.60 per share, in 1990.
Results for 1990 include charges of $27.7 million on an after-tax basis for items related primarily to divestitures, reorganization, legal and environmental activities. Of this amount, $13.7 million was incurred in the fourth quarter of 1990. Excluding these charges, Tredegar's 1990 net income would have been $2,980,000, or 26 cents per share. Without these charges, Tredegar would have incurred a net loss of $4,195,000, or 37 cents per share, in the fourth quarter of 1990.
John D. Gottwald, Tredegar's president and chief executive officer, said: "Given the continued weakness in the general economy, we're encouraged by the improvement in results for both the quarter and year. In particular, our plastic film business continued its strong performance. Our coal business also contributed significantly to profits, although results were considerably behind last year's record pace. While results for the year in aluminum were unsatisfactory, performance improved during the fourth quarter. Our molded plastics business continued to struggle. Improved performance during 1992 depends, to a large extent, upon a general economic recovery."
Tredegar Industries is a diversified manufacturer of plastics and metal products and has interests in coal, oil and gas.
