TREASURE ISLAND CASINO, NSP TO REINFORCE AND BUILD UP STURGEON LAKE ROAD TO PROTECT AGAINST SURFACE FLOODING AND PROVIDE ACCESS IN DAYS AHEAD

RED WING, Minn., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Treasure Island Casino and the NSP Power Plant at Prairie Island will begin construction on Friday evening, June 25, to build up and reinforce Sturgeon Lake Road as protection against potential highwater and to insure continual access for Casino customers, employees, Prairie Island Tribal residents and power plant employees.
Sturgeon Lake Road is the only road connecting the casino, the plant and the Prairie Island Indian community to County Road 18, the main public thoroughfare to the area. Recent high waters along the Mississippi River have posed the threat of moderate flooding on Sturgeon Lake Road which traverses two small lakes which are part of the Mississippi's backwater system.
It is uncertain as to exactly how high the flood waters may rise above the road surface. According to casino officials, engineering predictions call for only a few inches at the crest which is expected early to mid-week. It is also possible that the road may be spared any flooding should the level of the Mississippi not rise noticeably above projections.
Nevertheless, as a precaution and to insure the safety and convenience of casino customers and employees, employees of the NSP plant and the residents of the tribal community, it was decided to go ahead with the temporary construction project. Once the threat of the floods has subsided, the road would be returned to its original condition.
Some time delays should be anticipated due to this construction project since the road will be restricted to one lane.
