TRAVELERS NAMES SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR MANAGED CARE OPERATIONS

HARTFORD, Conn., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Stephen H. Matheson, a widely respected leader in the managed care field, has been named senior vice president for managed care operations at The Travelers.
In making the announcement today, Elliot F. Gerson, president of Travelers Managed Care and Employee Benefits Operations, said Matheson's appointment "underscores our commitment to managed care and strengthens our position as an industry leader." Prior to joining Travelers, Matheson was president of CIGNA Healthplan and senior vice president for managed care operations where he directed CIGNA's managed care operations including HMOs, PPOs, and pharmacy.
In his new position, Matheson, 47, will have responsibility for all related managed care operations and will serve as chairman of the Travelers Health Company.
"Steve Matheson will provide overall direction and leadership for product development, servicing and operation of Travelers' managed care businesses," Gerson said. "In addition, he will assist me in defining our strategy related to health care reform."
The Travelers Health Company was formed in March 1993 to focus on the competitive strengths of The Travelers' managed care products and services to meet the changing needs and requirements of employee benefits, workers' compensation and property-casualty customers.
The subsidiary coordinates the businesses of several Travelers managed care operations including CONSERVCO, U.S. Behavioral Health, Center for Corporate Health and The Travelers Health Network. Dwight L. Robertson, M.D., will continue as president of the Health Company and in addition, will work directly with Gerson and the division's top management as senior medical advisor.
"Steve Matheson's business expertise and experience will be invaluable as we continue to build on the excellent progress Dwight Robertson has made since the Health Company was formed six months ago," Gerson said.
Also at CIGNA, Matheson served as president of its Eastern Region where he was responsible for managed care and indemnity health care operations in the eastern third of the country. He also handled key positions involving strategic planning, account operations and new business underwriting during his service at CIGNA.
Matheson received a bachelor of science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1968 and an M.B.A. from The Harvard Business School in 1974. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1971. He and his wife Karen and their twin daughters reside in West Simsbury.
