TRAVEL SOUTH MAGAZINE FINDS FAVORITE FISHIN' HOLES
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The summer issue of

Travel South magazine isn't spouting "big fish tales" when it tells you where you can find the big ones biting.
The magazine asked fishing writer and broadcaster Steve Price to list some of his favorite fishing spots. Here are some of his picks, followed by phone numbers that interested anglers can call for more information:
-- Pickwick Lake (Florence, Ala.) -- top smallmouth bass fisheries in the South, Price told Travel South; 4- to 6-pound fish landed regularly; excellent crappie and sauger populations, (205-764-4661).
-- Lake Okeechobee (Clewiston, Fla.) -- 700-square-mile mini- ocean; bass in the 7- to 10-pound range (813-983-3151).
-- Kentucky Lake (Gilbertsville, Ky.) -- 160,000 acres; quality bass; crappie; big catfish (502-362-8386).
-- Toledo Bend Reservoir (Many, La.) -- stocked with Florida bass (318-256-5880).
-- Lake Murray (Columbia, S.C.) -- bass, crappie, bream and catfish (803-734-3888).
-- Lake Fork Marina (Alba, Texas) -- top-trophy largemouth bass lake in the South, possibly in America, Price told Travel South; regularly produces bass over 12 pounds (903-765-2764).
-- Lake Sam Rayburn (Jasper, Texas) -- one of the best overall largemouth bass lakes in the South, Price said; fish in the 4- to 8- plus-pound class (409-384-2762).
-- Shenandoah National Park (Virginia) -- 42 different trout streams; brown, rainbow and brook trout available (703-999-3283).
-- Smith Mountain Lake (Halesford Bridge, Va.) -- striped bass, largemouth bass, muskie and walleye; smallmouth bass which exceed 35 pounds (703-721-1203).
Best of all, Travel South discovered, fishing doesn't have to mean roughing it -- especially in Arkansas.
White River Resort in Lakeview, Ark., offers accommodations ranging from double-occupancy rooms ($57 per night) to kitchen- equipped cabins that sleep four ($307 per night). Use of a boat comes with every room. Motor rental, which includes fuel, costs $38.50 a day. Celebrate your success by having the resort restaurant cook your catch for you (501-431-5202).
Resorts ring Bull Shoals Lake, giving guests a wide variety of accommodations to choose from. Travel South suggests a visit to the Bull Shoals Boat Dock, which offers guided float trips on the White River, just below the lake; rentals of all types of boats; a scuba shop; sales and service of boats and motors; and a bait and tackle store (501-445-4424).
There are also plenty of activities, shopping and dining at Bull Shoals to keep the whole family entertained.
