TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY, RAILROAD ADMINISTRATOR ISSUES STATEMENT ON NEW PRESIDENT OF AMTRAK

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Federico Pena, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and Jolene Molitoris, administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, issued the following statements on the selection of Thomas M. Downs as the new president of Amtrak:
 Pena:
"I'm very pleased by the selection of Tom Downs. He has the qualities to lead Amtrak into the next century and to make it a truly world-class railroad. As we look to achieve clean air and energy efficiency goals, passenger rail service will have to play a greater role. I look forward to working with him to help see that Amtrak expands its role in our national transportation system.
"I also want to pay tribute to Graham Claytor, who guided Amtrak through the very tough years in previous administrations when there was no support for passenger rail service. He can take great pride in his accomplishments, and we all thank him for his years of public service, both at Amtrak and in the many posts he held before."
 Molitoris:
"Tom Downs is an excellent choice as chairman. His experience as head of major transportation organizations at the local and state levels, his background as D.C. city administrator, his service with the federal government and his reputation for effective leadership make him extremely qualified for this position."
