TRANSMEDIA NETWORK INC ELECTS JACK AFRICK, VICE CHAIRMAN OF U.S. TOBACCO

TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS; COMPLETES FRANCHISE SALE FOR CALIFORNIA
 NORTH MIAMI, Fla., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Transmedia Network Inc. (NASDAQ: TMNI), which owns and markets the Executive Savings Card entitling holders to 25 percent savings on meals, today announced that Jack Africk, vice chairman of UST, a Fortune 500 company and holding company of U.S. Tobacco Company and other subsidiaries, has been elected to become the seventh member of Transmedia's board of directors.
 Africk has been with UST since 1979 and became president of its United States Tobacco Company subsidiary in 1987. Prior to joining UST, he was president of R.J. Reynolds - Puerto Rico and senior vice president of RJR-MacDonald, Inc., an R.J. Reynolds subsidiary in Canada, and executive vice president of Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company.
 "The board joins me in enthusiastically welcoming Jack and we are excited over the contribution we know he'll make to Transmedia's future growth, especially with his successful 40-years' experience in marketing and merchandising," said Melvin Chasen, chairman of Transmedia.
 Chasen went on to say Transmedia yesterday completed a franchise sale for the state of California. Purchase price for the franchise was $250,000, plus an additional $250,000 which will be contributed to Transmedia's advertising fund by the new franchisee: The Western Transmedia Company, Inc. (A).
 An agreement in principal for this sale was announced on Oct. 2, 1991 and, as announced at that time, Stuart M. Pellman, a practicing attorney for 25 years, will serve as president of The Western Transmedia Company, Inc. Pellman had been associated with Steefel, Levitt and Weiss, San Francisco, since 1989 and, prior to that, served as general counsel to Transmedia Network Inc.
 "Stu Pellman is an outstanding selection to head the new franchise," Chasen said, adding, "he not only knows the California and Western markets but also is thoroughly familiar with the workings of our organization."
 Transmedia Network Inc., established in 1984, derives its income from membership fees and cardmembers' use of the Executive Savings Card which makes available to cardmembers food and beverage credits issued to the company by restaurants in return for cash advances used by these dining establishments for a wide variety of needs.
 More than 1,400 restaurants and 100,000 cardmembers have joined the Transmedia program to date. Transmedia maintains two facilities: an executive, sales and marketing office in New York City, where the company serves a growing market throughout the New York tri-state area, and an executive and sales office as well as Cardmember Service Center in North Miami, where Transmedia is headquartered and serves the Florida market.
 In addition to California, Transmedia franchises include: most of New Jersey; Philadelphia, Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware; the Chicago metropolitan area, and Washington - Baltimore, including most of Maryland and Northern Virginia.
 (A) Note: The name "The Western Transmedia Company, Inc." replaces "Transmedia West," Transmedia Network's prospective California franchisee as announced on Oct. 2, 1991.
