TRANSITION COORDINATOR OF MERCHANTS NATIONAL CORPORATION MERGER NAMED; DIGIROLAMO AND MASSEY TO CO-CHAIR MERGER INTEGRATION STEERING COMMITTEE
 INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Merchants National Corporation (NASDAQ: MCHN) today announced that National City Corporation (NYSE: NCC) of Cleveland has named Vincent A. DiGirolamo as the transition coordinator of the merger of the two organizations. In this capacity, DiGirolamo, 54, will be responsible for the integration of Merchants National into National City, a task that is expected to be largely completed one year after the transaction closes.
 DiGirolamo will relocate to Indianapolis and work from the Indianapolis headquarters of Merchants National Corporation. DiGirolamo has considerable experience in the area of integration management, having overseen the consolidation of BancOhio National Bank into National City Bank, Akron. Since then, National City Bank, Akron has more than doubled its profits and assets while holding total employment below pre-merger levels.
 As previously announced, the Transition Steering Committee to coordinate the merger of Merchants National Corporation with National City Corporation will report to David A. Daberko, deputy chairman of National City Corporation, and will have authority for major integration decisions in the areas of organization, consolidation and communication. The Steering Committee will be co-chaired by transition coordinator Vincent A. DiGirolamo and James D. Massey, president of Merchants National Corporation.
 Serving on the Steering Committee will be three representatives from National City and three from Merchants National. Representatives from National City include Jeffrey M. Biggar, senior vice president, National City Corporation; Jon L. Gorney, senior vice president, National City Bank, Cleveland; and William E. MacDonald III, senior vice president, National City Corporation and vice chairman, National City Bank, Cleveland.
 Merchants National representatives include Janice L. Faherty, executive vice president, Merchants National Bank, James D. Madigan, senior executive vice president, Merchants National Corporation; and Randolph P. Wilson, vice chairman, Merchants National Corporation.
 Reporting to this Steering Committee will be a series of small task forces in major functional areas. These task forces will be led by the respective heads of the specific functions at National City and Merchants National. The task forces will be responsible for the integration planning of their specific functions and will report regularly to the Steering Committee.
 It is expected that task forces will be established in the following areas: audit, compliance, corporate banking, credit administration, credit card, finance, human resources, data processing/operations, legal, residential mortgage banking, investments/funding/dealer, trust and retail banking.
