TRANSATLANTIC BALLOON RACE TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND

TRANSATLANTIC BALLOON RACE TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND
BANGOR, Maine, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corp. is sponsoring

the FIRST balloon race across the Atlantic Ocean, the Chrysler Transatlantic Challenge, to begin this weekend from Bangor, Me.
Weather permitting, the launch will take place Sunday, Aug. 16, between 6 and 7 a.m. The race from Bangor to Europe is estimated to last three to five days. The first team to land in Europe and cross a paved road wins. Honors also will be awarded to the team traveling the farthest.
The five two-person teams represent the United States, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands. All balloons and equipment are exactly the same, giving each team an equal chance of winning while emphasizing the experience and skill of the individual teams.
No one has ever raced across the Atlantic in a balloon. And, while there have been 16 attempts, only five manned balloons have successfully navigated the entire voyage across the Atlantic.
The United States team of Richard Abruzzo and Troy Bradley, both of Albuquerque, N.M., is competing for more than the event's prize. Abruzzo's father was a member of the first team to cross the Atlantic in a balloon in 1978.
"My father set a world record as a member of the first team to successfully cross the Atlantic in a balloon," said Abruzzo. "Not only do we plan to cross the Atlantic, but we want to be the fastest team and travel the farthest."
The Chrysler Transatlantic Challenge is a landmark event that celebrates international cooperation and competition. According to Frederick K. Cody Jr., Chrysler manager of international marketing, "Chrysler is sponsoring the race to highlight our recent return to the European market."
Chrysler returned to the European market in 1987 and since that time sales have steadily increased to more than 45,000 Jeep(R) vehicles, passenger cars and Voyager minivans in 1991.
