TRANSARC FORMS DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL FOR DCE AND ENCINA PRODUCTS

Initial Offerings for IBM and Sun Platforms
PITTSBURGH, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Transarc Corporation today

announced the formation of Transarc Sales Group (TSG). TSG is Transarc's platform-neutral distribution channel that directly and/or cooperatively sells and supports OSF(TM) DCE distributed computing products and Transarc's Encina(TM) products for open online transaction processing (OLTP) in North America.
With initial offices in Pittsburgh and the San Francisco Bay area, TSG currently sells and supports IBM's implementations of DCE and Encina for the RS/6000 platform and Transarc's implementations of DCE and Encina for Sun platforms. In addition, TSG is in discussions with Hewlett-Packard (HP) regarding direct and/or cooperative marketing of HP's DCE and Encina products, and it anticipates providing Encina and DCE on other computing platforms as well.
TSG's charter is to provide customers with "one-stop shopping" for DCE and Encina products and services, and to work cooperatively with other organizations to ensure that customers can easily purchase and effectively use these advanced distributed computing solutions. TSG leverages Transarc's long-term leadership role in the development of DCE and Encina and its strong relationship with other providers of DCE and Encina products and services. In fact, in 1992, Transarc was the leading supplier of DCE and Encina to end users. By forming TSG, Transarc demonstrates its intention to increase its role in not only the development of technology, but in the development of the retail distributed computing marketplace.
Sandy Esaias, formerly regional director of sales for Legent Corporation, is manager of TSG. "The marketplace for true client/server solutions like DCE and Encina is burgeoning," according to Esaias. "We have more than 120 customers today, and we're finding enormous demand for our vendor-neutral distribution channel and our highly-focused sales and support services." TSG support services provide a single point of contact for customers to resolve DCE and Encina questions, regardless of their computing platform.
"Charles Schwab & Co. has maintained a close working relationship with Transarc during the past two years, and we've benefitted from their DCE and Encina products as well as their customer support, training and consulting offerings," said Lloyd Westbrook, director of information architecture for San Francisco-based Charles Schwab & Co. "The products and expertise the Transarc Sales Group offers have been crucial to the progress we've made in defining Schwab's new information systems architecture, which is based on open, client/server solutions like the OSF DCE."
"Transarc Sales Group offers customers a single, highly knowledgeable interface to DCE and Encina products and services," added Alfred Spector, Transarc's president and CEO. "With commercial-quality DCE and Encina products and industry-leading pre-sales support, training and service offerings, corporations and other organizations can benefit today from these advanced distributed computing and transaction processing products."
Presently, the Transarc Sales Group distributes DCE and Encina products as manufactured by IBM for the RS/6000 platform, as well as DCE and Encina products for Sun Microsystems computers as manufactured by Transarc's binary products group. Mike Machutt, product development manager for IBM's DCE and Encina products, noted that Transarc has sales and technical skills that will benefit IBM customers. Derek Brink, business manager of Transarc's binary products group, commented, "As more customers demand the benefits of distributed computing offered by DCE and Encina, Transarc's DCE and Encina products for the Solaris operating environment will play an increasingly important role, as will the vendor-neutral sales and support capabilities of TSG." Transarc is expected to disclose availability, pricing and platform support of additional binary products for Sun systems, including support for Solaris 2.2, next week at SunWorld in San Francisco.
Transarc Corporation is a leading developer of systems software products for open, distributed computing environments. With headquarters in Pittsburgh, the company's products focus on key areas of distributed computing including file systems and transaction processing. Transarc's first major file systems product, AFS(TM)3, is licensed and supported in 16 countries worldwide. Customers of Transarc's Encina products for open OLTP include Citibank and Charles Schwab & Co. The company also produces and distributes binary versions of Encina and DCE products on multiple computing platforms. Transarc continues -- as it has since its formation in 1989 -- to invest in the development of innovative software products for distributed computing.
