TRANS-ATLANTIC PEN PALS MEET VIA SPRINT VIDEOCONFERENCE
CHICAGO, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Children from Chicago's Oriole Park Elementary School today met their trans-Atlantic pen pals from Little Kingshill School in England for the first time via a Sprint videoconference.
More than 25 children, ages 10 to 12, have been sending letters to each other since last September as part of Sprint's involvement in Chicago Public Schools' Adopt-a-School Program. Sprint arranged the videoconference so the children could become better acquainted and learn something about each other's countries.
Oriole Park (5424 N. Oketo) is a kindergarten through 8th-grade school. Enrollment for fall 1991 is 370 students. Sprint's goal is to support the school by broadening education programs available to the students.
Little Kingshill School is located in the village of Hyde Heath, about 40 miles outside of London. Thirty children from Chicago and 30 children from Little Kingshill participated in the videoconference.
"Today's event represents one of many opportunities that Sprint employees hope to bring to the students of Chicago public schools," said Patti Manuel, vice president and general manager of Sprint's Major Accounts Group.
The videoconference between Chicago and England spanned more than 4,000 miles and was sponsored by Sprint and Cable & Wireless of the United Kingdom.
Sprint is the Adopt-a-School sponsor at Oriole Park. Since September 1991, more than 40 Sprint employees have donated their time throughout the school year in a variety of activities, including algebra tutoring, reading and basketball programs, a science fair and a "Young Authors" writing contest.
"The Adopt-a-School Program allows the children to advance their skills and see the opportunities that education can provide them," said Al Sterling, coordinator of the Chicago Public Schools' Adopt-a- School Program. "At the same time, the children at Oriole Park develop wonderful friendships with Sprint volunteers."
The goal of the Adopt-a-School Program is to enhance the quality of education by involving the business community in the teaching process. It also strengthens instruction in academic skills and enriches the education program through the talent and creative resources that can be provided by the participating organizations.
Sprint's Video Group is a videoconferencing market leader offering a broad spectrum of service options, from full-service managed videoconferencing to customer-managed switched services.
Sprint (NYSE: FON) is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
