Byline: Matt Williams is keen to be against maiden North South Divide

Shiwawa drift a concern

EXCHANGE layers took a pounding at Lingfield and Southwell yesterday with 12 winning favourites, some of which were very well backed.

There was some respite for the layers at Sedgefield, where the results were much more bookie-friendly, with 3-10 shot Silk Drum the only winning favourite on the card.

The pounding wasn't so bad for those who opposed the Alan Swinbank-trained Shiwawa in the 1m4f maiden at Southwell. The six-year-old was a late exchanges drifter and the layers didn't have to wait long to see their money was safe, as the gelding broke slowly and came under immediate pressure, before being pulled up after halfway. It will be interesting to see what the BHA makes of the pre-race drift after it has studied the betting patterns.

Fehily the man for Mann

CHARLIE MANN has a big weekend ahead with Air Force One looking to cement his place among the top tier of chasing's elite by attempting to win the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury on Saturday.

Mann is in great form and with some of the top yards performing a shade below their best, Air Force One has an awful lot going for him. Noel Fehily steered Mann's Gauvain to victory at Lingfield yesterday, and although the Lambourn-based jockey has been around for years, it's about time he started to get the recognition he deserves.

He must be about 30 now, which means he is no spring chicken by jump jockey standards, and it is easy to forget that he is JP McManus's number two at Jonjo O'Neill's, proving how highly he is thought of by the legendary Irish gambler.
