TRADERS ON WORLD'S LARGEST GOLD EXCHANGE HELP SMALLEST U.S. OLYMPIAN 'GO
 FOR THE GOLD'
NEW YORK, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- While the United States' "Dream Team" of NBA superstars is likely to dwarf its competition in Barcelona this summer, America's smallest Olympian, 4 foot 7 inch, 72 pound gymnast Shannon Miller, will need all the support she can muster and has turned to a group of traders on Commodity Exchange, Inc. (COMEX), the world's largest gold exchange, for an assist.
Miller, who won the recent U.S. Olympic Trials, visited the floor of the busy futures exchange Tuesday in order to kick off a fund-raising drive in which COMEX members are helping to send Miller's parents, Ron and Claudia, as well as her brother and sister, from Edmond, Okla., to Barcelona. The 15-year-old gymnast's visit came at the invitation of COMEX member Stephen Karvellas of KVL Trading. Karvellas is owner of Team USA Sports Camp in Port Jervis, N.Y., where Miller has frequently trained. The drive, which as already netted thousands of dollars in pledges, is a concerted effort between Young Athletes of America, Karvellas, and Team USA Sports Camp.
Miller, accompanied by her long-time coach, Steve Nunno, and Donna Redel, chairman of the board of COMEX, was greeted in the exchange's gold ring by a chorus of "USA! -- USA! -- USA!" and requests for more than 200 autographs from traders who all but abandoned their posts in order to meet the youngest female ever to make the U.S. National Team. For her part, Miller, who performs the world's most difficult balance beam and uneven bar routines, said she was "overwhelmed by the reception," but was "not nervous" about the upcoming Olympics. Following the Summer Games, Miller will make a return visit to COMEX keeping a pledge she made to many of the traders she met Tuesday.
