TRADERS AND CONSUMERS WELCOME ENERGY EFFICIENCY LABELS ON ACS.

A number of suppliers, traders and consumers have welcomed the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's (MoCI) move to put energy efficiency labels on air conditioners (ACs).

The initiative is in accordance with the Omani Gulf Standard Specifications for Energy Efficiency and Minimum Energy Efficiency Requirements for Air Conditioners called GSO 2530/2016. It will be implemented with effect from July 25.

The labelling on ACs will help ensure products are equipped with safety features. The new ACs will provide high levels of safety for consumers and the environment.

Ahmad bin Said al Namani, importer for Homer company, said, 'The new specifications for the one-piece single unit window ACs and two-piece non-piped split ACs would help reduce electricity consumption. These new types of ACs will last longer than the air conditioners with old specifications.'

He pointed out that the older types of ACs during high temperatures led to fires and came with various other defects. He pointed out that the Omani Gulf standard specifications helped in achieving a number of economic objectives such as reducing the increasing demand for energy.

Musa bin Rashid al Shukaily, distributor of Nikai Gulf products, said that the energy efficiency labels of ACs will inform the consumers and help them in choosing better quality and suitable ACs. These labels have star-rating to categorise the types of ACs. He pointed out that new ACs will be better for the environment.

Yousuf bin Saif al Jabri from Oman Marketing and Services Company said, "The energy efficiency labels will help consumers in choosing ACs that suit their requirement. These ACs will reduce consumption of electricity, and offer high quality performance with increased life span.'

MoCI has invited companies to adhere to the standard specifications.
