TOYS 'R' US REPORTS FIRST QUARTER SALES AND EARNINGS RESULTS
PARAMUS, N.J., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Toys "R" Us (NYSE: TOY) announced today that its sales for the first quarter ended May 2, 1992 increased 14.3 percent to $1.172 billion compared to $1.026 billion for the first quarter last year. Net earnings for the quarter increased 26.4 percent to $28.3 million or $.10 per share compared to $22.4 million or $.08 per share for the first quarter last year.
Charles Lazarus, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, said, "Our U.S. toy stores achieved comparable store sales increases of 4.7 percent, with strong increases in basic toy categories. As a result, our margins strengthened due to a much more favorable product mix. Our European toy stores experienced double digit sales increases while the Canadian stores continued to be adversely impacted by local economic conditions and therefore had a small comparable store decrease. Kids "R" Us experienced weak results, which reflects the difficult apparel sales environment".
Lazarus further stated, "Our 1992 store expansion program is on schedule. We plan to open approximately 85 toy stores in the United States and internationally, including our first stores in Austria. We have already opened two additional stores in Japan and continue to be excited about our results. We also opened two stores in Germany and one store in France. Our Kids "R" Us division opened 14 stores through March and plans to open 8 more stores including a new market, Puerto Rico".
Toys "R" Us is the world's largest toy specialty retailing chain currently operating 497 toy stores in the United States, 131 international toy stores and 203 Kids "R" Us children's clothing stores.
