TOYOTA TOPS MILLION VEHICLE SALES IN '92

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A. Inc., today reported that its total vehicle sales for 1992 were 1,023,641, up 1.0 percent from the 1,010,476 it sold in 1991.
"Toyota sold more than a million vehicles for the third year in a row. This was one of the toughest years yet, because the market has been very competitive and the economic recovery has been slower than we expected," said Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president. "A strong dealer body, quality new products like Corolla and T100 pickup, and a new wave of consumer confidence make us hopeful in 93."
Sales of Toyota's North American-built vehicles rose 21.4 percent to 406,379 for 1992. North American-built Toyota vehicles accounted for 39.7 percent of sales during 1992, up from 33.0 percent in 1991.
Sales leaders for 1992 included Camry, up 8.3 percent to 286,602 and its best year in history; Paseo, up 59.4 percent to 36,513; and Toyota pickup truck, including the new T100 intermediate- size pickup, up 8.0 percent to 176,611.
Toyota's U.S.-built Camry sedan sales passed the 750,000 milestone in December 1992. U.S. Camry production began in Georgetown, Ky., in May of 1988.
Other Toyota sales records set in 1992 include:
-- 3 millionth pickup in March,
-- 500,000th domestic Corolla in April,
-- 4 millionth Corolla in May,
-- 15 millionth vehicle in June,
-- 12 millionth car in October, and
 -- 50,000th U.S.-built pickup in November.
Exports of U.S.-built Camry and Corollas to Japan, Taiwan, Europe and the Middle East increased 77 percent to 43,682, including 4,204 right-hand-drive Camry wagons to Japan and the United Kingdom.
Lexus had its best year and month ever, with 1992 sales up 30 percent to 92,890 CYTD and December sales up 9.0 percent to 9,854. The ES300 led with an increase of 75.8 percent for the year to 39,652, and 32.8 percent for the month to 4,655; December was the LS400 flagship's best month of 1992, with sales of 3,405, up 11.5 percent over December of 1991.
There were 308 selling days in 1992 and 307 in 1991.
