TOYOTA SIGNS FOR HUGHES VIDEOCONFERENCING NETWORK
GERMANTOWN, Md., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS)

of Torrance, Calif., has broken new ground in satellite communications with the installation of a two-way, satellite-based videoconferencing network that links 13 remote sites simultaneously. The contract with Hughes Network Systems, Inc. (HNS) calls for deployment of HNS' inTELEconference system. The network is valued at over $600,000.
The new network provides Toyota's Torrance headquarters and 12 regional sales headquarters with full-motion, two-way video and audio conferencing capabilities. Network sites include Boston, New York, Cincinnati, Washington, Chicago, Kansas City, Houston, Jacksonville, Denver, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Both regular operational meetings and impromptu information exchanges are already taking place over the new system, according to Robert Best, TMS group vice president of administrative operations.
The inTELEconference equipment consists of 2.4 meter send/receive satellite antenna installed on the rooftop of each site, compact electronic units for transmitting signals, and a PC-based Network Control Center that supports special conference management software.
The latest release of the inTELEconference product permits "n-greater-than-8-way" linkage among a company's sites. The number of sites which may now participate in a conference is now virtually unlimited; previously the maximum number had been eight.
Thanks to satellite transmission, inTELEconference enables a member site on the network to host a videoconference with any other site or sites on the network. Different operating modes are available; a dynamic reconfiguring capability lets the host select which sites will be visible at a given time. The operating modes supported include: broadcast mode (lecture-style conference), multipoint conferencing (single-site video), two-way with multipoint (two-site video, multiple audio), or a simple one-on-one meeting. Toyota's network operates at 384 Kbps, providing exceptional picture quality network-wide.
Commented HNS Executive Vice President Gene Cacciamani: "Toyota has deployed inTELEconference at a more sophisticated level than any other customer to date, configuring the network to accommodate all 13 of its sites simultaneously. And, because the network operates via satellite, Toyota can conference with all these sites for the same cost as a simple point-to-point conference."
The premier provider of interactive VSATs, HNS offers communications network solutions that include the Personal Earth Station, Gemini earth station, Telephony Earth Station, digital cellular technology and advanced switching products. HNS is a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft Company, a unit of GM Hughes Electronics.
