TOYOTA SALES RISE IN 1993, SEVERAL RECORDS SET

 TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., today reported that its total sales increased 1.3 percent to 1,033,211 in 1993, its fourth consecutive million-seller year and the fifth in its history.
 "The year started with uncertainties because of the economy and the yen," said Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president. "However, Toyota's strengths in product quality and its dealer body helped end the year on a positive note."
 Toyota set several sales records in 1993:
 -- Best ever: North American-built vehicles, up 18.6 percent to
 480,213
 -- Best ever: North American-built Toyota cars, up 8.1 percent to
 368,053
 -- Best ever: Lexus, up 2.3 percent to 94,677
 -- Best ever: Total Camry mid-size sedan, coupe and wagon, up
 4.9 percent to 299,737
 -- Best ever: North American-built Corolla compact sedan, up
 19.0 percent to 158,107
 -- Best ever: U.S.-built Toyota pickups, up 73.4 percent to
 112,160.
 U.S.- built Camrys rose 1.2 percent to 209,946; total Toyota pickups rose 16.2 percent to 204,526; and the Supra sports car rose 144.0 percent to 2,901.
 North American-built Toyota cars and trucks accounted for 46.5 percent of total Toyota sales in the United States, up from 39.7 percent in 1992.
 The 4Runner sport utility vehicle increased 17.3 percent to 46,652 in 1993; the Land Cruiser luxury sport utility vehicle increased 13.7 percent to 8,962.
