TOYOTA MOTOR SALES CHAIRMAN AND VICE CHAIRMAN RETIRE

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The retirement of Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A. Chairman Yukiyasu Togo and Vice Chairman Robert B. McCurry was announced today.
Although announced today, the retirements were effective Dec. 7, 1993, the date of the most recent TMS board meeting.
"Yuki Togo and Bob McCurry were one of the most successful teams in the international auto industry," said Shinji Sakai, TMS president and chief executive officer. "Their contributions to Toyota's tremendous growth in the U.S. have been invaluable."
In June 1992, Togo and McCurry handed over day-to-day responsibility (as TMS president and chief executive officer, and executive vice president, respectively) for the company's U.S. operations to Sakai and Yale Gieszl. Under their leadership, Toyota established important new operations, including the Lexus Division; VPI Transport, a division of Vehicle Processors Inc.; the TMS Export Office and Toyota's aviation operations in Long Beach, Calif.
As one of the strongest sales teams in the U.S. auto industry, they also established a new record for total U.S. vehicle sales by -- in 1986 -- making Toyota the first import automaker to sell more than 1 million vehicles in a single year.
Togo, 69, first became associated with Toyota in the late 50s as a successful Toyota Crown rally driver. He joined Toyota Motor Sales Co. Ltd., in June 1961 and held a number of sales-related positions until 1971, when he became executive vice president of Toyota Thailand Co. In 1976, he joined Toyota Canada Inc. and, in 1980, became president. He joined TMS as president and chief executive officer in 1983.
McCurry, 70, joined TMS as general manager of the Los Angeles region in 1982. He had previously served as general manager of Mid Atlantic Toyota (MAT), a privately owned Toyota distributor serving five states and the District of Colombia. MAT is now owned by TMS and has been renamed Central Atlantic Toyota (CAT). In 1985, McCurry became TMS senior vice president and in 1988, executive vice president.
Togo and McCurry will continue to serve in an advisory capacity to Sakai.
