TOYOTA EXPORTS FIRST U.S.-MADE CAMRY COUPE TO JAPAN

LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The first all-new right- hand-drive Camry Coupe left the Port of Long Beach today for Japan. Production of the Toyota Camry Coupe recently began at Toyota Motor Manufacturing (TMM), U.S.A. in Georgetown, Ky., the only producer of Camry Coupes and Wagons in the world. The Camry Coupe will be marketed as the Scepter Coupe in Japan.
This year, some 300 Camry Coupes will be exported to Japan, along with 8,700 Kentucky-built Camry Wagons. In 1994, Camry Coupe exports will be expanded to include Canada.
Toyota currently exports left- and right-hand-drive Kentucky-made Camry Wagons to Japan, Europe, Canada and the Middle East. In addition, Toyota exports TMM-made Camry sedans and New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI)-built Corollas to Taiwan. NUMMI is a Toyota/General Motors joint venture in Fremont, Calif.
"This marks another milestone in Toyota's export program," said Shinji Sakai, president and chief executive officer, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. "Just five years ago, Toyota exported 200 vehicles to one country -- Taiwan. In model year 1993, Toyota's U.S. exports will exceed 50,000 vehicles, valued at about $780 million, to 22 countries."
Sakai added, "Toyota's investment of more than $5.2 billion in U.S.- design, engineering, manufacturing, distribution and sales facilities will allow us to continue to increase exports of U.S.-built vehicles as we expand our existing markets and open new ones." By the mid-90's, exports are expected to increase by 60 percent to 80,000 units.
Toyota also exports to Japan TMM-manufactured 4-cylinder engines, crankshafts and connecting rod sets to Japan, as well as catalytic converters from TABC in Long Beach. Last year, Toyota and its suppliers exported $1.12 billion worth of auto parts and materials to Japan.
