TOYOTA EXPORTS 100,000TH U.S.-BUILT VEHICLE
TORRANCE, Calif., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- A Japan-bound Camry Wagon left the Port of Long Beach, Calif., last week, marking the 100,000th U.S.-built Toyota vehicle exported worldwide, company officials announced.
In 1988, Toyota's U.S. export program began with the shipment of 200 Corolla sedans from New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, Calif., to Taiwan. Today, Toyota exports NUMMI Corollas along with Camry sedans and right- and left-hand-drive Camry Wagons from Toyota Motor Manufacturing (TMM) in Georgetown, Ky., to 22 countries. NUMMI is a Toyota/General Motors joint venture.
"Toyota is committed to increasing worldwide exports of its U.S.-made vehicles," said Toyota Motor Sales Executive Vice President Yale Gieszl. "Last year, Toyota exported 43,000 vehicles. This year that number will exceed 50,000 units. And by the mid-'90s, some 90,000 U.S.-built vehicles will be exported annually." In addition to Japan, Toyota exports Camry Wagons to Europe, Canada and the Middle East. The Camry Wagon, which Toyota began exporting from the United States last year, accounts for approximately 40 percent of the company's exports from the United States. Gieszl noted that Toyota expects Camry Wagon exports to Japan to increase 200 percent to approximately 10,000 units in 1993. Toyota also exports NUMMI Corollas and TMM Camry sedans to Taiwan. Since March 1990, Corolla and Camry models have been the top-selling import passenger cars in Taiwan. Last month, the NUMMI- built Corolla became the No. 1 car sold in that country. In addition, Toyota exports TMM-manufactured four-cylinder engines, crankshafts and connecting rod sets to Japan, as well as catalytic converters from TABC Inc., Toyota's manufacturing facility in Long Beach. -0- 3/8/93 /EDITOR'S NOTE: Photo and graph are available upon request./ /CONTACT: Mindy Geller, 310-618-5204, or Carol Traeger, 310-618-5297, both of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A./
