TOYOTA AWARDS TWENTY-NINE 'YOUTH FOR UNDERSTANDING' SCHOLARSHIPS
NEW YORK, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota's U.S. operations announced today that they have awarded 29 scholarships to American high school students to participate in the Youth for Understanding International Exchange "Summer in Japan" program.
Youth For Understanding (YFU) is a private, non-profit educational organization that has been working since the early 1950's to enhance international understanding through the sponsorship of student exchanges. The scholarship recipients, who were selected by YFU on the basis of academic performance and vigorous extracurricular involvement, will spend six weeks living with a Japanese host family. During their stay they will be totally immersed in the way of life of a Japanese teenager and exposed to the culture, language and traditions of Japan. At the same time, the U.S. students will act as roving good-will ambassadors, introducing their Japanese counterparts to American culture. YFU is founded on the concept that such exchange brings young people to greater understanding of the world.
Toyota was the first corporation to sponsor YFU programs beginning in 1975 and has sponsored more than 200 scholarships over the years. This year's class of 29 students represents the largest ever sent for the six-week program. Toyota's investment in the program this year exceeds $100,000.
The students, who come from all over the U.S., will gather in San Francisco today for a comprehensive orientation program presented by Toyota and YFU. They will depart San Francisco for Japan on June 26, returning to the U.S. in the first week of August.
