TOYOTA 1992 AWARD FOR QUALITY GOES TO AC ROCHESTER DIVISION OF GM

FLINT, Mich., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota Motor Corporation has awarded AC Rochester Division of General Motors the Toyota 1992 Award for Quality Performance in the "Excellent" category.
The award was given for high quality reached in hydraulic valve lifters made in AC Rochester's Grand Rapids, Mich., plant and exported to Toyota in Japan. Valve lifter shipments from the Grand Rapids plant to Toyota in Japan have had a defect rate of zero parts per million -- defect free -- since July 1991.
The Grand Rapids plant builds nearly a half million valve lifters a day for customers worldwide. About 30 percent of the plant's lifters are exported.
The award was presented at Toyota's Third North American Export Suppliers Meeting in Los Angeles today (Monday, May 10). Seven U.S.- based suppliers received the award.
Jan E. Tannehill, AC Rochester general manager, was one of two suppliers asked to speak at the meeting, which drew about 450 supplier executives, Toyota officials, and American and Japanese trade officials.
Tannehill noted that process improvements developed through the Toyota-AC Rochester relationship have allowed the Grand Rapids plant to improve the quality of products delivered to all of the plant's customers.
