TOYOTA, LEXUS SALES RISE IN FIRST 10-DAY PERIOD OF MAY

 TORRANCE, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A. Inc. today reported that Toyota and Lexus divisions' combined sales surged to 18,744 units for the first 10 days of May 1993, a 25.7-percent increase over the previous year.
 During the 10-day period, Toyota Division sold 17,234 vehicles, a 24.9-percent increase from 13,798 the previous year. Lexus Division, with the recent addition of the GS300 luxury performance sedan, sold 1,510 cars, a 35.1-percent jump from 1,118.
 Toyota sold 5,854 Camrys, a 44.9-percent increase from the previous period in 1992. Corolla sales climbed 21.3 percent to 3,901 units. Other Toyota/Lexus sales highlights during the first 10-day period in May include: 700 4Runner units, a 35.4-percent rise from the previous year; 111 Land Cruisers, a 26.1-percent climb; 3,240 Toyota pickups (including compact models and the new T100 intermediate-size pickup), a 35.7-percent leap; 509 Lexus ES 300s, a 9-percent increase; and 1,617 Tercels, a 6.5-percent rise from the previous year.
 Of Toyota's total Camry sales during the period, 3,925 units were built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Inc. in Georgetown, Ky., a 28.9-percent increase over the number produced a year ago. Corollas crafted at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, Calif., and Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Canada in Ontario numbered 3,205, a 51.5-percent jump from the previous year.
 NUMMI-built Toyota compact pickup sales were 1,621, a 206.4-percent leap over the first 10-day period in May last year, when start-up production was still in process.
 Toyota's North American-built vehicle sales of 8,751 represented a 53.8-percent increase over the 10-day period last year and 46.7 percent of Toyota's total U.S. sales. During the 10-day period last year, North American-built vehicle sales totaled 38.1 percent of Toyota's total U.S. sales.
 Toyota has sold 146,643 North American-built vehicles calendar- year-to-date (CYTD) 1993, a 22.2-percent rise over CYTD 1992.
 There were eight selling days in the 10-day period in 1993, the same number during the 10-day period of May 1992.
