TOYOTA/PBS ENCOURAGE 'HIGHER GOALS' AMONG TEENS
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- "Higher Goals" is a new public

television special and in-school curriculum to encourage young people, who are eyeing professional sports or other "dream" careers, to put those dreams in perspective and focus first on getting an education.
The half-hour television special features NBA superstar Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons and Tim Meadows of "Saturday Night Live," and will be aired nationally on PBS next fall (1992).
"Higher Goals" is sponsored by Toyota and produced by KTCA-TV, St. Paul/Minneapolis, and Kartemquin Educational Films, Chicago.
"Higher Goals" tells the real-life struggle of two young basketball players, a boy and a girl, William Gates and Kim Williams, as they attempt to balance their basketball dreams with the realities of graduating from high school and trying to go on to college. Through their stories, the program will show that the skills of practice and discipline, which stimulate success in sports and other activities, can also be applied to success in academics.
"Higher Goals" will be supported by a nationwide in-school curriculum to be mailed to students in more than 4,000 inner-city schools. The curriculum guide will help teachers lead discussions and other activities to help young people understand the distinction between the "dream" of playing in professional sports (or becoming a star entertainer), and the "goal" of going to college to prepare for a career that offers opportunities to more than just a lucky few. "Higher Goals" will help get students involved and thinking about their own dreams and how they can best set realistic goals to prepare for their futures.
"We're proud to be part of such a worthwhile project," said Yale Gieszl, senior vice president, finance and administration, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "We don't want to stop young people from dreaming. But, we want to encourage them to be realistic and make sure they have a solid back-up plan."
In addition to the television special and curriculum, the "Higher Goals" project also includes a national competition in which students from 20 cities will have the unique opportunity to develop their own music videos on the subject of staying in school.
The winning school in each city will receive a personal visit by Isiah Thomas or another NBA player. They will discuss their own personal views on the importance of education and answer student questions.
Other highlights of the school visit will be the presentation of the music video award and a $1,000 scholarship for the student who most exemplifies the "Higher Goals" vision of effectively balancing sports and academics.
Cities included in the competition are: Atlanta; Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Cleveland; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Los Angeles; Miami; Milwaukee; Minneapolis/St. Paul; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Portland, Ore.; San Antonio; and San Francisco. Contest materials will arrive at schools in those cities in January 1992.
Teachers interested in receiving the curriculum and/or contest materials may call 612-871-9179, ext. 350.
