TOYOTA'S problem with fuel systems [...].

Byline: VERDICT COLIN GOODWIN Motoring Editor

TOYOTA'S problem with fuel systems that could lead to leaks from petrol tanks is potentially serious but the other recall, involving airbags, is even more worrying.

The biggest recall ever involved airbag canisters made by Japanese firm Takata and resulted in 30 million cars being recalled. Like the current issue there was a possibility a weld in the canister could fail and it would be propelled into the cabin like a grenade. Toyota says the canisters in recalled models in the UK are not made by Takata.

The fix is to fit a bracket that stops the canister going into the cabin if it explodes.

So far there have been no reports of injuries. During the huge airbag recall, 11 US deaths were linked to canisters exploding.
