You can follow in the footsteps of the men who discovered gold on Holland America Line-Westours Inc. trips marking the Alaska gold rush centennial.
The trips range from nine to 18 days, including a three-, four- or seven-day cruise. Tours will depart from and return to Skagway, historic gateway to the Klondike. Sightseeing can include Dawson City, Yukon Territory, the Yukon River, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and Denali National Park.
Touring is by motorcoach, cruise liner or train, depending on the itinerary. On trips booked by Feb. 28, a 50 percent discount is offered for the second person in a cabin; figuring a 25 percent discount per person, that bring the tour costs to $1,425 per person. Pedal the Big Island: Getaway Vacations offers six-day bicycling tours of the island of Hawaii with van support, professional guides, restaurant meals and inn lodgings. Call of the wild: Wilderness Inquiry offers winter adventures in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Wilderness Area this winter, including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dogsledding. Cost is $575 per person for a five-day ski-and-dogsled trip; A six-day dogsled adventure through the back woods of the Superior National Forest costs $945. Trips are scheduled from late December through early March. Included are instruction, meals, lodging, equipment and guides; round-trip van transportation between Minneapolis and the wilderness is available for an additional $60 per person. River jaunts: KD River Cruises of Europe offers a seven-day Christmas cruise on the Rhine, departing Dec. 20 and 27 from Cologne, Germany, and including a stop in Speyer, where passengers can attend Christmas Eve Mass in the Imperial Cathedral, and a New Year's Eve ball aboard ship.
