TOURISM INVESTMENTS.

Tourism Minister Rafael Subervi said that The Ritz Carlton chain has requested Government approval for the construction of a luxury hotel in the Punta Cana area, reports DR1 Daily News (April 15, 2002). Ritz Carlton already has hotels in Cancun (Mexico), San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Rose Hill (Jamaica). It will open a hotel in Grand Cayman in 2003. Subervi added that Westin, Hyatt and Sandals are other big names that plan to open hotels in the Punta Cana area. With the exception of Sandals (which will offer upscale all-inclusive products), the other U.S. companies plan to operate on the MAP plan (Modified American Plan: includes only the room, breakfast and dinner, no lunch or alcohol or sports). This would be new for Punta Cana where all-inclusive properties dominate. Punta Cana is booming, with other major investments being the championship bowling alley that will open this summer and the construction of a Carrefour shopping mall.
