TOSHIBA AWARDS PRAXAIR FIVE-YEAR, $20 MILLION CONTRACT

 DANBURY, Conn., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. has awarded Praxair, Inc. (NYSE: PX) a five-year, $20 million contract to supply liquid helium and nitrogen for use in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems at radiological centers throughout the United States. Toshiba, headquartered in Tustin, Calif., markets, sells, distributes and services diagnostic imaging systems.
 Praxair will be supplying Toshiba with cryogenic services, as well as liquid nitrogen and liquid helium. Praxair expects to help Toshiba achieve a 10 percent to 15 percent reduction in overall cryogen consumption through statistical process control techniques.
 Praxair helium and nitrogen will be used as cooling agents for superconducting magnets which are essential to the operation of MRI systems. Praxair will provide Toshiba with sales and service on a local level through its service business comprised of specialists dedicated solely to the supply and support of liquid helium customers.
 In addition to use for medical applications, helium is used in welding operations, scientific and defense balloon flights, and research activities.
 Praxair is the largest helium producer in the industrial gases industry and has a global distribution network. Praxair also is the largest industrial gases supplier in North and South America and one of the largest in the world with 1992 sales of $2.6 billion.
