TOSHIBA AMERICA REACHES MILESTONE -- PRODUCTION OF TEN MILLIONTH TV

LEBANON, Tenn., Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- A Toshiba manufacturing facility nestled near the Cumberland River today reached a milestone of 10 million color TV sets. This accomplishment will be celebrated November 18 through November 22 by Lebanon residents, as well as local and state Tennessee government officials and business leaders.
Since the start of operation in 1978 with a single production and line, the Tennessee plant has steadily and continuously expanded its production capacity. The plant now has six lines and 700 employees and has become the largest employer in Wilson County. In 1981, TNP achieved the milestone of producing its one millionth color TV and reached the five millionth production level in 1988. Last year, production reached 1.4 million units which include color TV sets from 19-inch through 46- inch as well as 46-inch to 56-inch projections screens.
TNP, which is at the leading edge of Toshiba's globalized color TV manufacturing operations, has sister production facilities in Japan, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom. TNP supplies high-quality Toshiba TVs not only to the U.S. but to other countries, including Canada, Mexico and Latin America, and it has greatly contributed to Tennessee's position as one of the nation's leading exporting states.
Throughout its operations, TNP employees strive to make world class products. Toshiba's color televisions are consistently ranked number one by the leading U.S. consumer electronics trade publications. The company has had great success in introducing large screen color sets. Toshiba's Super-Tube, for instance, has achieved approximately 30 percent of U.S. market share. To help create these award-winning televisions, Tennessee employees count on quality color picture tubes produced by more than 1,000 fellow employees in Horseheads, New York.
"This milestone -- the 10 millionth set -- is a tribute to all of our employees and to American manufacturing," said Hitoshi Ohashi, president of Toshiba America Consumer Products, Inc. "Our success exemplifies the best of American industry and says to all that 'proudly made in the USA' is not only a phrase but a commitment to consumers in the U.S. and worldwide."
TNP is also committed to the future development of TV technology. Working with TACP's Advanced TV Technical Center in Princeton, N.J., TNP is now preparing to setup manufacturing operations for future HDTV sets in the United States.
The Tennessee plant is also committed to being a good neighbor. "Toshiba has truly become part of the fabric and the community," said Susan McCoin, executive director of Lebanon-Wilson County Chamber of Commerce.
As part of their community involvement program, plant employees support the establishment and maintenance of the Wilson County Youth Ranch, a home for neglected children. The company also provides scholarship funds to encourage students to attend local educational institutions -- Cumberland University and Volunteer State Community College at Gallatin. Employees also foster science education in local high schools and the neighboring Cumberland Science Museum through the Toshiba America Foundation.
Toshiba's community contributions have been recognized and praised by government officials, including Vice President-elect Al Gore and Tennessee Governor Ned McWherter, who appreciate the company investment in American manufacturing when many other companies have moved production off-shore and closed their U.S. plants.
TACP is one of five operating companies of Toshiba America, Inc., a holding company for Toshiba's diversified U.S. operations in electronics and energy.
