TOSCO CORPORATION COMPLETES START-UP OF ITS PROJECT TO MANUFACTURE LOW SULFUR, LOW AROMATICS DIESEL FUEL IN CALIFORNIA

 STAMFORD, Conn., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Tosco Corporation (NYSE: TOS) announced today the completion and start-up of its project to manufacture low sulfur, low aromatics diesel fuel that meets California's strict environmental specifications. This project, which involved the investment of over $30 million, will result in the ability to produce about 25,000 barrels per day of this higher valued fuel. The first sales of this fuel have already been made.
 Tosco Corporation's Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, Thomas D. O'Malley, stated, "We are pleased to be one of five refiners in California to comply with California Air Resource Board standards for this fuel in advance of the deadline of October 1, 1993. Being one of the first refiners to provide the California consumer with cleaner burning diesel fuel puts Tosco among the leaders in improving the quality of our environment."
 Tosco Corporation is an independent refiner that processes and markets over 400,000 barrels per day of petroleum products, with operations on both the East and West Coasts of the United States.
