TOP WOMAN RUNNER FROM PUERTO RICO TO COMPETE IN PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL RUN; HMA SPONSORS CENRTAL AMERICAN GAMES GOLD MEDAL WINNER

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Healthcare Management Alternatives (HMA), a minority-owned, West Philadelphia-based health management firm that administers the city's HealthPASS program, announced today that it has agreed to sponsor Naydi Nazario, one of Puerto Rico's top female runners, in the sixth annual Latin American International Run to take place in Hunting Park, between 10th Street and Old York Road at Lycoming Avenue on Sunday, Aug. 22, at 4 p.m.
About 5,000 to 10,000 spectators are expected to attend the race, the highlight of a day-long schedule of activities beginning at noon Sunday.
Nazario, 37, is a native of Santurce, Puerto Rico, who now resides in Rio Piedras. She is widely recognized as one of the country's top woman runners. In 1984, she qualified for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In 1986, she was a Gold Medal winner, representing Puerto Rico in the Central American Games. She has also competed in marathons in London, Paris and the prestigious Boston Marathon. In November, Nazario will again represent Puerto Rico in the Central American Games. Nazario's best time in a 26-mile marathon is 2 hours, 45 minutes. Her personal best in the 5-mile is 30 minutes, six seconds, which is the fastest time of all women competitors in this year's road race.
HMA officials view their sponsorship as a way of increasing visibility and recognition of the broad health message the company has to offer for all of Philadelphia. "Though our service area is primarily West and South Philadelphia, we see the sponsorship of this important event organized by the Latino community as an extension of our mission to outreach across Philadelphia with the message that HMA is supportive of events that promote fitness and good health," stated Christine Torres-Matrullo, HMA director of Special Segment Marketing. "We believe the Latin American International Run is certainly that type of event."
In addition to its sponsorship of Nazario, HMA will sponsor Edgar Joel & His Orchestra, a popular local band scheduled to give a free performance after Sunday's road race. The band currently has a hit record titled "El Sol De Hoy," which has been the top record in terms of sales on Puerto Rico's music charts for the past three weeks.
Matrullo and Diego Gomez, HMA's coordinator for Special Segment Marketing, will attend Sunday's event to distribute health-related literature to attendees and answer questions regarding the HealthPASS program.
