Use a lawn aerator to rake out dead, brown grass that chokes the lawn. You can compost this, or if it's mostly moss, use it for lining your winter hanging baskets. To rid the lawn of moss, improve the growing conditions. A badly drained lawn will be the worst affected, but a well- trodden surface will also invite moss to spread. After raking, aerate the lawn by piercing holes in the grass, about 4in deep, with a garden fork. To kill the remaining moss use Levington Autumn Extra, or similar, which destroys moss and includes a blend of fertilisers that will encourage strong, healthy growth of the lawn.
