TOP SOURCE LEAN BURN ENGINE CONTROLLER PROMISES TO REDUCE COLD START EXHAUST EMISSIONS

TOP SOURCE LEAN BURN ENGINE CONTROLLER
PROMISES TO REDUCE COLD START EXHAUST EMISSIONS
NEW YORK, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Top Source, Inc. (NASDAQ: TOPS) chairman, Stuart Landow, announced today that Top Source will exhibit its patented lean burn engine controller to automotive engineers from around the world the week of Feb. 24 in Detroit at the International Society of Automotive Engineers Convention. The patented controller, licensed to Top Source from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is designed to optimize fuel economy and performance with an engine operating in the lean burn mode. It will also significantly reduce cold start exhaust emissions.
The engine fuel economy and emission reduction control system (EFECS) underwent successful preliminary fixed point testing at the Arthur D. Little Automotive Labs in Cambridge. Additional real time tests are planned in the near future. Automobile manufacturers around the world, such as Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen are now using and testing various engine control strategies to operate engines in the lean burn mode because of the significant improvement in fuel economy. However, lean burn vehicles have demonstrated difficulty meeting the new emission standards for oxides of nitrogen (Nox). The EFECS closed loop engine controller can control an engine to achieve minimum emissions without loss of power and driveability.
The EFECS technology is expected, with further refinements, to precisely control air/fuel ratio and ignition timing, and provide self tuning for the life of the engine. EFECS is expected to be a feasible control strategy for a large population of passenger vehicles.
