TOP NEWS PEOPLE ELECTED TO OVERSEAS PRESS CLUB BOARD

 NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Overseas Press Club of America, made up of more than 700 print and electronic journalists who cover world news, has elected eight new members to its board of governors, Larry Smith, president of the club, announced.
 Named as active governors by the membership are:
 -- John Corporon, senior vice-president and news director of WPIX, New York, which produces the hour-long Channel 11 New at 10 program.
 -- John R. (Rick) MacArthur, president of the Harper's Magazine Foundation and publisher of Harper's Magazine since 1983.
 -- Henry Muller, editorial director of Time, Inc., since Feb. 1, 1993; formerly managing editor of Time Magazine.
 -- Andrew M. Nibley, editor of Reuters America, the international news agency, since 1989.
 -- Ponchitta Pierce, television host, producer and magazine writer, formerly with WNBC-TV's "Today in New York."
 -- Kitty Pilgrim, CNN business news correspondent, whose reports appear in more than 100 countries.
 -- Robert E. Sullivan, bureau chief and news director, The Americas, for Worldwide Television News.
 -- Named as an associate governor is John Polich, a faculty member of the Fordham University Graduate School of Business and a specialist in management consulting and marketing research for the communications industry.
 Speaking for club, Smith said, "The addition of these outstanding men and women makes this one of the strongest board of governors the OPC has had in our more than 50-year history. I believe it augurs well for an active and productive year ahead, culminating in our annual awards, which are so highly esteemed throughout the communications world. I also would like to thank the other distinguished candidates who ran: David Cudaback, Felice Levin, Caryl Stern and Chris Willcox, all of whom are valued members of our club. Expanding and strengthening foreign news coverage is a vital task today, and I look forward to working with the new board in advancing the OPC's efforts in this direction."
 Holdover board members include Whitman Bassow, George Burns, Janice Castro, Ralph Gardner, R. Edward Jackson and Elmer Lower. Other officers besides Smith are: Norman Schorr, William Holstein and Allan Dodds Frank, vice presidents; Marjorie Longley, secretary, and Raymond K. Price, treasurer. Serving as ex-officio members of the board of governors are Victor Reisel, Anita Diamant, Herbert Kupferberg, Leonard Saffir and H.L. Stevenson, all past presidents.
